Abstract : The selected best towns not only showcase Australia's rich natural and cultural charms but also provide an ideal living and tourism destination for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of cities and enjoy a peaceful and fulfilling lifestyle.

Australia, renowned for its diverse natural landscapes and abundant outdoor activities, boasts an array of towns that cater to all types of travel enthusiasts. Demographer Bernard Salt conducted a survey and assessment of 752 towns across Australia, selecting the best towns in each state based on a rigorous set of criteria.

According to the 2021 census data, these criteria included median household income, unemployment rate, tertiary education rates, proportion of skilled workers, proportion of home ownership, international birth rates, volunteer rates, provision of unpaid care, long-term health status, and hours spent on household chores. These criteria provide a comprehensive reflection of the towns' socioeconomic development and quality of life.

The final selection of the best towns by state includes:

- Victoria: Bright

- New South Wales: Kiama

- Northern Territory: Nhulunbuy

- Queensland: Tamborine Mountain

- South Australia: Mount Barker

- Western Australia: Dunsborough

- Tasmania: Legana

Taking Bright in Victoria as an example, this town is famous for its picturesque autumn scenery. Originating from the gold rush era of the 1850s, Bright has evolved into a tranquil resort town focused on tourism. Located just over 3 hours' drive from Melbourne's central business district, it is renowned for its pristine farms, vineyards, and proximity to Falls Creek ski resort. The annual Autumn Festival attracts visitors to admire the vibrant autumn foliage and art exhibitions.

Meanwhile, Kiama in New South Wales is celebrated for its charming beaches and rolling hills. Located approximately 2 hours' drive south of Sydney, Kiama captivates visitors not only with its natural landscapes but also due to its high average income, entrepreneurial spirit, and overall health levels, earning its place among the best towns. From the heart-shaped beach at Minnamurra Lookout to the columned forest at Bombo Headland Quarry and the famous Kiama Blowhole, Kiama offers diverse tourist attractions and the coastal walking trail known as the Kiama Coast Walk.
